Koehler Switches power plant from lignite to biomass at its Greiz location

Koehler has set itself the goal of producing more energy with its own renewable energy facilities from renewable sources than is required for its paper production operations by 2030. To achieve this aim, the company continues to invest in biomass heat and power plants, wind farms, hydroelectric power and solar energy. The power plant conversion at the Greiz site is part of the Koehler Group’s climate strategy, as well as an investment in the future.

Decarbonization power plant

The Koehler Group has successfully converted its power plant at the Koehler Paper Greiz site from lignite to fine wood fraction. This success can be partially credited to the experts at Koehler Renewable Energy, who were able to develop a process that will make it possible to use a previously unused range of biomass materials at the existing coal-fired power plant. This is an unprecedented innovation in the market that should open up many new opportunities in the push to decarbonize combined heat and power plants. The test run for the converted power plant was kicked off with a ceremony with the presence of Wolfgang Tiefensee, the State Minister of Economy, Science, and the Digital Society of the German state of Thuringia.

Dr. Stefan Karrer, Chief Operating Officer of the Koehler Group, explains: “By replacing fossil fuels, we here at Koehler are getting increasingly closer to our goal of group-wide decarbonization. The plan is to reduce the Koehler Group’s scope 1 direct greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2030 in comparison to the levels from 2022. Our Koehler Paper site in Greiz is kicking things off with its pilot power plant.”
