What is the difference between coated and uncoated paper?

On a coated paper, the coating mass is applied to the raw paper in the paper machine using a squeegee, thus sealing the surface. The paper can be coated more than once, depending on application.

Uncoated papers are machine-smoothed or matt after the production process, and can be satin-finished using a calender or embossed using an embossing roller.
