FAQs

Thermal Paper

Can I purchase ready-made cash receipt rolls from Koehler?

No, Koehler is only a manufacturer of thermal papers which are then supplied to converting companies. They make the thermal paper into finished cash receipt rolls, and print things on it where necessary. We can however gladly help you to find a converter from whom you can obtain cash receipt rolls.

There has been a lot in the press about “poisonous” thermal papers. Is it true?

These reports relate to the use of the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) in thermal paper. This chemical is used in many Koehler thermal papers. Bisphenol A is used for a very wide range of applications and is one of the most thoroughly examined substances in the world. There is no known study which furnishes proof of reproducible negative results. Recognized organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the German Federal Institute for the Evaluation of Risks (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, BfR) have stated that it is safe to handle thermal papers containing BPA.

Does Koehler offer alternatives to thermal paper containing BPA?

On account of the scientifically verified facts, Koehler considers the use of BPA in the manufacture of thermal papers absolutely harmless. The European Thermal Paper Association (ETPA) also points out the safety of thermal papers containing BPA. However, we do offer BPA-, bisphenol or phenol free alternatives if desired.

Why do thermal paper receipts fade over time?

The image which develops on thermal paper is produced by a chemical reaction between color-forming substances and color developers. This chemical reaction can undo itself over time, since the dyes tend to revert to their original state – white, that is. Plasticizers, oils, sunlight and liquids can speed up this process. The image stability of a thermal paper can therefore only be guaranteed if it is handled and stored in the way specified by the manufacturer.

Can thermal papers be recycled?

Thermal papers can be recycled in the waste paper system just like conventional paper. They can also be disposed of in depots and waste combustion plants.
